Glossary

Wydział > Faculty : a coherent  grouping of academic institutes or departments  headed by a Dean.

Instytut > Institute  (English School/Department): an organisational unit  of a Faculty.  An institute takes its name from the discipline it teaches and  researches. Some Institutes have over  100 teaching and research staff members.

Zakład > Department (English Department/Institute): one of organisational units into which the  institute or Faculty is divided. A  department is research focused.

Katedra > literarlly Chair, frequently means Department: Katedra is a confusing name. Usually degree programmes are taught within  the framework of institutes. However, some katedras do research and teach their own specialised programmes, e.g. Department (Chair) of Musicology in the Faculty of History.

Pracownia > Section ( English Centre/Lab/Research Group): sections are part of institutes and provide  access to specialised equipment and/or are research focused.

Centrum  > Centre: most centres are research groups.
